A Blessing Is In It: How God Led an Alcoholic, Fame-Seeking Songwriter into Nursing Home Music Ministry

God hides a treasure inside every affliction.

Do you believe that? Susan Piper does, and shares her story to assure us that in Christ, brokenness produces giftedness and service brings healing.

Guitar in hand, 15-year-old Susan Piper walked into the Cleveland bars in pursuit of stardom. A couple of decades later, Jesus decided that was long enough and pulled her out again with His mighty outstretched arm. From teen alcoholism, fame seeking, and PTSD to nursing home music ministry, A Blessing Is in It chronicles God’s unlikely redemption of an all-but-ruined life.

Listen in as Susan tells warm-hearted and self-deprecating stories of the people who brought her to Christ, her vehicle misadventures, and her precious little dog sidekicks. Join her at the bedside of those who have been forgotten and see how God uses the lonely, broken people she serves to bless her and heal her own brokenness.

Slightly impressionistic, yet easily accessible with a bias towards humor, A Blessing Is In It sings with lyrical tenderness, transparency, and wry, ecclesiastical wit.

Read it if you’re lonely. Read it if you know someone who is lonely. Read it to be comforted and changed by the power of God’s grace.

“Destroy it not,” says God in Isaiah 65:8—don’t throw it away—“for a blessing is in it.”

What Amazon readers are saying:

I couldn't put this book down! I laughed, I cried, and I hurt from the depths of my heart.

Just finished A Blessing Is In It...loved it, from the humor to the deep sharing and insights.

I had to read it because it is about Nursing Home Ministry, and I work in a Nursing Home. The writing style is so interesting; I could hardly put it down. I found myself rereading much of it. It made me laugh and cry.

Enjoyed each chapter of this very thoughtful book. Well written and full of humor.

Susan’s whimsical writing style, stirring song lyrics, and selections of Scripture will breathe new life into any soul that’s stuck in despair. Through eyes of faith, she sees what others miss… what matters most in life.

Susan Piper is a singer-songwriter whom the Lord Jesus Christ rescued from a dark and hopeless past.

Before her unexpected conversion, Susan won the Kerrville Texas Songwriting Competition; performed in a multitude of dives and even some nice venues, including the Philadelphia Folk Festival; and recorded two albums for Sliced Bread Records. Since meeting her Savior, she only sings in lovely places and has recorded seven CDs about Him.

Nowadays, guitar in hand, Susan walks into nursing home rooms with her canine partner Levi. When she’s not working, Susan enjoys as much excitement as a highly sensitive person can stand in her little town in Northeast Ohio. Her pastimes include writing, solving British crime dramas, and pedaling Levi around in his bicycle basket.
